DIY Candles & The Perfect Scent at Candlefish

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to pass by a juniper shrub without immediately reminiscing on the summers I spent as a child by my grandma’s pool.  The scent of honeysuckle takes me back to being a teenager and riding our four-wheelers through the countryside on warm southern nights.  And there’s something about gardenias that make me feel like home no matter where I am.

Similar to a great song, there’s something about the right fragrance that can transport you into yesteryear and trigger a flood of memories tied to a single fragrant note.

I realized this was an exceptionally accurate statement for me as I explored the library of fragrances tied to each candle at Candlefish’s newest location in Atlanta.  With over 100 fragrances to choose from, I’m just glad they provided a library card for me to keep track of the candles I loved and those that didn’t resonate with me.  I was invited to a lovely night of candle making earlier this spring where I was instructed on the practice of making the perfect candle and this is when I truly started to hone in on some of those scented notes that made me feel warm and fuzzy inside 😉

Candlefish Candle Making Workshop:

I started my journey by discussing things that I knew that I loved the scent of with the Candlefish staff, and they directed me to a few candles that touched on some of the fragrant notes I had mentioned.

A Few of My Favorites:
No. 8
No. 28
No. 39
No. 60
No. 72
No. 100

Number 8 was definitely my overall favorite as it smelled like gardenias.  During my recent trip to New York this spring I stayed at the Plaza Hotel, which also smelled of gardenias throughout.  It was lovely to find a candle that tied in my love for this fragrance and all the special old and new memories I have with it!

After choosing our favorite scents, we headed over to the candle making station set up near the windows and commenced our foray into becoming “chandlers” – makers of candles.

We mixed the oils fragrances with the soy wax, attached our labels and secured the wick on the bottom of our votives, and poured our candles to set overnight.

I found the perfect scent at Candlefish and loved my DIY candle making class.  Candlefish was actually created by the same candle makers who created  Rewined Candles.  My favorite Rewined Candles are Rosé & Pinot Noir.

Customizing candles with my favorite fragrances, BYOB for whatever we wanted to sip on, and adding delicious light bites from local Ponce City vendors made for the perfect candle making workshop.  While I might not be a professional chandler yet, I’m happy to have the perfect candle for my home!
